Texas’ success will ultimately depend on how these talented players gel. Reliable guard play, relentless defense, and being able to close out tight games will be crucial if this team wants to finish at the top of the SEC. For this team to achieve its goal of taking home an SEC title, Miller will need to form lineups that can play together when shots are not falling.
What Gives Texas a Chance at Contending

The Longhorns have an elite frontcourt featuring key returner Matas Vokietaitis, who had an outstanding finish to last year’s season. Vokietaitis serves as the team’s defensive anchor and has elite rim-protecting and rebounding abilities.
Last season, the big man from Lithuania averaged 15.6 ppg and 7.1 rebounds per game on 61.9% from the field. Vokietaitis boosted his averages during tournament play. He averaged 16 PPG and 8 rebounds. His return to this Texas squad gives them an elite rebounder. The big man also does an excellent job of using his seven-foot frame to clean the boards and create and convert on second efforts.
One of the best pickups in the portal was Texas landing TCU transfer David Punch. Last season, Punch was arguably the most impactful player on a solid TCU team.
Punch is known to be a bruiser inside who loves to use his strength and physicality. Standing at 6’7 and weighing 245 lbs, he rises to the occasion when guarding bigger defenders in the low post. This will allow Vokietaitis to be more of a weakside presence and help defenders who can roam the paint more freely.
Punch uses his physicality to set strong screens on defenders, creating easy scoring chances for himself and easy offense for his team. The junior forward is a nightmare on defense as he is always wearing down his opponents.
The Longhorns know they are getting an impact player in Punch. Last season, he averaged 14.1 ppg and 6.8 rebounds per game. This adds another inside presence for the Longhorns.
One of the most surprising events was Texas landing one of the top prospects in the class of 2027, Marcus Spears Jr. Not many people in the sport expected him to reclass and be part of this freshman class.
Spears is an elite athlete who gives Texas improved spacing on offense and a versatile defender who can switch onto and guard multiple positions. Miller will look to use Spears in small-ball lineups on occasion, which allows for the Longhorns to play at a faster pace.
Spears runs the floor well and can attack the basket off the bounce, giving Texas another scorer and another avenue to create offense. His passing ability and touch inside will help as he continues to develop his outside shot.
Texas will also have elite guard play this year. Miller landed McDonald’s All-American Austin Goosby. The incoming freshman has an elite first step that allows him to get by defenses when they collapse or try to run him off the line.
With Mikey Lewis sidelined for some time, Goosby will likely take on a heavier load at the beginning of the season. Miller will be counting on his freshman guard to create shots, initiate the offense, and use his length to spread defenses out.
Goosby’s elite shooting ability may discourage defenses from crowding Vokietaitis and Punch inside the paint. His ability to move without the ball and make cuts gives Texas another way of scoring without Goosby needing the ball.
How the Pieces Fit Together

By doing this, Miller is ahead of the other top teams. Goosby will need to serve as the engine of this offense. With his six-foot-five frame, elite court vision, and ability to drive past his defender and get downhill, Goosby will be able to find Vokietaitis for easy points off dump-off passes or use drives and kicks to find open shooters.
Both Punch and Spears are elite at crashing the glass. They do a great job of converting second-chance opportunities. Having an elite inside presence on defense like Vokietaitis and an athletic wing like Spears allows the perimeter defenders to play more aggressively and speed up opposing offenses, which leads to turnovers and easy transition points. This Texas roster can wear opposing offenses down come SEC play.
The Last Word
There is no question that Texas has the talent to win an SEC championship. However, their success will come down to what lineups Miller decides to roll out. The Texas frontcourt gives them a solid foundation, while their reliable guard play can prevent their opponents from dominating the paint. Depending on freshmen means that Miller and his staff will be fine with freshman mistakes.
If Texas can produce lineups that take care of the ball, defend, and stretch defenses out, they will be a dangerous team in the SEC. The ability to be consistent will take them far this season and help them take down the reigning SEC champs, Florida.
