UConn football falls short at Miami in Ohio, 24-21

The UConn Huskies (2-2) fell 24-21 to the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks (2-2) in a battle that came down to the wire. The Huskies dominated the first quarter but the second half went back and forth after the home team tied it up at the break. The RedHawks scored the game-winning points on a field goal after UConn interception in its own territory.

Quarterback Kalieb Osborne completed 17 of 32 (53.1%) passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, adding 88 yards and a score on the ground. He started off strong, but UConn’s total yardage declined in each successive quarter. Miami’s offense picked up across the game until starting QB David McComb left the game in the fourth quarter.
On the game’s first drive, Osborne hit Ryder Treadway for 24-yard pass on the very first play. Javon Brown caught a 20-yard pass on 3rd & 15 after a holding penalty sent them back. He caught his second reception in the end zone from eight yards out to make it 7-0.
After a quick three-and-out, UConn received the ball at their 16-yard line. Another Brown reception got them to midfield and, on fourth-and-1 from Miami’s 38-yard line, Osborne faked a hand-off and ran outside with a clear path to the end zone, making it 14-0 in the middle of the opening frame.

The RedHawks tried to answer, but couldn’t move the chains. On third-and-12, McComb fired to Maleek Huggins for the first down at their 43-yard line. The team advanced to the Huskies’ 26-yard line, but K’Von Sherman stuffed running back D’Shawntae Jones on 4th down to get the visitors the ball back.
UConn punted on the ensuing possession and then Miami went on a 90-yard touchdown drive to make it 14-7. McComb found Damarion Witten on that drive’s second play for 31 yards. A horse-collar penalty advanced them to UConn’s 35-yard line. On fourth-and-1, McComb banked a 16-yard pass to Braylon Isom to the 10-yard line. With just over 6 minutes before halftime, McComb kept on an option play for the touchdown.
After another UConn punt, Miami tied the game with a 58-yard touchdown pass to TE Brendan Loftus, who made a one-handed catch at the 30-yard line and cruised into the end zone.
To end the first half, Osborne sailed the ball to Brown and Cam Abshire for a combined 40 yards. Kicker Jack O’Connor missed the 46-yard field goal as time expired.
Coming out of the break, Isom notched a 35-yard catch. On Connecticut’s 25-yard line, Sherman sacked McComb for a 9-yard loss, forcing a 44-yard field goal attempt that missed.
After a three-and-out by UConn, the RedHawks took their first lead of the day. The home team converted on back-to-back third downs. McComb had a 32 yard scramble that got them into Husky territory. On the 33-yard line, McComb found running back Rodney Nelson out wide for a 23-yard pass and finished it off with an 11-yard throw to Scoop Smith in the endzone.
UConn responeded with a quick touchdown in the final minute of the third quarter. Osborne landed a 53-yard pass to Shamar Porter. From the 10-yard line, Osborne ran for 9 yards before Bowers plowed through for a 1-yard rushing touchdown.
McComb left the game in the fourth quarter, but UConn didn’t capitalize with one more chance to untie the game. But Osborne threw and interception that set up Miami’s game-winning field goal from 33 yards away.
Getting the ball back with three minutes left, two first-down completions to TE Matt Ragan pushed them to Miami’s 38-yard line. They went deep on first down and took pressure on second, while a close play at the sideline on third down was called incomplete after a review. They went for it on 4th down and Osborne couldn’t find anyone open, allowing the home team set up in run victory formation.
Next up, the Huskies return to Rentschler Field for their homecoming game against Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 3 at noon. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
