Gyanesh Kumar ‘used to recruit for BJP’, alleges Rahul Gandhi after ex-Keralam IAS officer’s claims

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday alleged that before Gyanesh Kumar took charge as the chief election commissioner, he had been used to “recruit for” the Bharatiya Janata Party.
He made the allegation soon after former Keralam Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson claimed in an interview to Onmanorama that in 2016, Kumar had asked him to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election as a BJP candidate.
Kumar is yet to respond to the claims. In 2016, he was serving as the resident commissioner for the Kerala government at Kerala House in Delhi. He was transferred from the post in May 2016 and appointed as the joint secretary in the Kashmir division of the Union home ministry, which was then headed by Rajnath Singh.
In May 2024, Kumar was appointed as an election commissioner.
Thomson’s claims come against the backdrop of Kumar facing criticism after an investigation by The Indian Express published on Wednesday revealed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally objected 14 times in 10 months to decisions related to the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, saying that some had been taken without their knowledge.
