Indiana football head coach Curt Cignetti believes in quarterback Josh Hoover and his defense, but the Hoosiers will not have a realistic chance of repeating as national champions unless they have an effective running game. Well, their leading rusher just suffered a lower-body injury while getting hit out of bounds during Friday’s home matchup against Northwestern. Turbo Richard headed to the medical tent and was eventually helped to the locker room.
Bloomington is sweating it out until more information is provided. The Boston College transfer logged nine carries for 68 yards in the first half and now has 383 on the year. He also scored four touchdowns in his first three games. Any man nicknamed Turbo is bound to be electric, but he has been especially valuable for Indiana thus far.
Fellow RB Khobie Martin has yet to make his season debut due to an arm injury, so the Hoosiers’ backfield will be worryingly thin if Richard is forced to miss extended time. Cignetti’s program is still facing a fairly manageable portion of its schedule, with road games versus Rutgers and Nebraska coming in the beginning of October, but the defending champs will battle Ohio State, Michigan and USC all by mid-November.

Although defense remains Indiana’s identity, the No. 5-ranked team in the country will require ample firepower against upper-tier Big Ten competition. The Hoosiers struggled to put points on the board early versus the Wildcats, but they settled in and went into halftime up 12-0. An active Turbo Richard would surely add more life to the offense.
“We’ll see,” Curt Cignetti said when asked about the 20-year-old’s status.
