Cavan Sullivan’s appearance for Team USA in the friendly against Team USA was a special moment for him, but soccer fans were not pleased with one comment a TNT commentator made.

He had a terrific game, and although he was denied a goal contribution, the talent was there on display for everyone to see.
Sullivan was selected for Team USA after his brilliant run of form for his club in the MLS. He had scored or assisted in the last six games leading up to the game against Peru.
Team USA Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino stated that Sullivan was ready to feature for Team USA.
“If we only talk about his performance, he’s doing really well in his club in Philadelphia. Talking only about that, I think he’s ready, but the rest of the players too,” Pochettino said about Sullivan before the game. “He’s mature enough on the field.”
While the attacker had a brilliant game, there was one moment from the TNT broadcast team that soccer fans were not happy about.
TNT commentator criticised by fans for stat comparing Sullivan and Lionel Messi
The TNT commentators team for the Team USA game included Brian Dunseth and Luke Wileman.
When Sullivan appeared on the screen, one of them said, “Since MLS resumed following the World Cup, only 2 MLS players have amassed 13 goal contributions, Leo Messi and Cavan Sullivan.”
Undoubtedly Sullivan is a talented prospect, but his hot streak is probably not close to what Messi has delivered for the past two decades.
Even comparing the two after the World Cup, Messi has 17 G/A, which shows how dominant he is despite being 39.
Soccer fans were not happy with the comparison and expressed their displeasure on X.
One user said, “Yes, he’s exactly like Messi, in that he is a footballer.” While another added, “By Americans it’s literally a void comment.”
A soccer fan ended up making Sullivan’s comparison to a US soccer legend. “Hopefully he’s as good as Landon Donovan,” he wrote.
Someone also questioned, “Is the comparison that Messi was 16 once too?”
Another fan gave flowers to Sullivan, but was not pleased with the comparison that was made.
“He’s a great prospect but stop comparing players to Messi,” he wrote.
Team USA has three more friendlies to play during this international break. This means Sullivan could have more chances to prove to fans why he is already one of the most talked-about prospects in US soccer.
