Less than a week ago, Team USA recorded their fifth consecutive FIBA World Cup win in Berlin, Germany. The Americans outplayed France to win the gold medal by 97-79. Now, head coach Kara Lawson has come up with her take on team selection for the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The Summer Olympics return to the United States after 32 years. Previously, Atlanta hosted the 1996 games, with the Americans bagging highest 101 gold medals.

Only two years remain until the Los Angeles Games. With the Americans winning the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup, the expectations are high for them as they prepare for the upcoming quadrennial event.
Speaking in a recent interview, Lawson explained the excitement behind the LA Olympics. Team USA’s head coach said, “Everyone’s very excited about the prospect of an American Olympics. We haven’t had one since Atlanta in 1996 of the summer variety. Probably most of our players or a lot of our players, weren’t born when the Atlanta Olympics happened.”

Believing that it would be a great opportunity for players to showcase their talent in front of the home crowd, Lawson further added, “We have a dynamic pool. I’m sure you guys know two of our top players were unable to come to the World Cup: A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum. And so we found that out right on the eve of the World Cup and had to make some changes roster-wise. This will be the most competitive women’s national team roster, I believe, to make in LA 2028 because we have so many talented players.”
Kara Lawson also talked about the interesting young talent in the WNBA. The American coach firmly added, “Now in the WNBA, we have young ones coming up and improving. So it’s going to be a battle for the next two years, just watching, observing the players. Obviously, Sue Bird is our managing director and did a great job picking this roster. And I know she’ll do a great job picking the one in LA.”

However, considering what Lawson said, young dynamic players such as Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, who were part of the World Cup team, will have to work on their skills and deliver consistent performance to stay in contention.
