McConkey caught five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown before leaving the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals with a rib injury.

After his early departure, McConkey did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, missing two straight days.

The Chargers face the Raiders on Sunday in their second straight home game at SoFi to start the season.

Before missing these two practices, head coach Jim Harbaugh called McConkey “day-to-day.”

Given his limited time on the field, McConkey’s playing status doesn’t look promising.

Why McConkey is so vital for the Chargers

McConkey caught 66 passes for 789 yards with six touchdowns in a down season, and he has the skill set to get 1,000 yards a season with ease.

He is the top receiving option for quarterback Justin Herbert, as a quality route runner with reliable hands and the ability to make a surprising number of contested catches.

With him, Quiton Johnson moves into the No. 1 receiver role, with Trey Harris, the second-year receiver, getting more work as well.

Additionally, Gary Jennings was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster, while Marquez Valdes-Scantling was signed to the practice squad.

Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has a long list of adjustments to make, and it just got longer without McConkey in the fold.

Luckily, any improvement from quarterback Justin Herbert can make up the difference against a weaker Raiders roster overall.

Kickoff between the Raiders and Chargers is scheduled for Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PT on CBS.
