Buffalo Bills OLB Greg Rousseau hunting QBs at a HOF pace

There was a time when Buffalo Bills edge rusher Greg Rousseau was able to hide a bit in the shadows of NFL’s trenches as a complete and steady 4-3 defensive end who often went about his business without a ton of outside fan fare. Drafted by the Bills 30th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Rousseau entered the team’s complex to great applause and he flashed brilliant ability during his rookie season.
Yet for all of Rousseau’s unique abilities as a 6’7”, 266 pound defensive end, he too often appeared limited by former head coach Sean McDermott’s 4-3 scheme. Rousseau was asked to play tight in the trenches, which seemed to hinder his ability to explode off the ball and use his length to swipe away offensive linemen.

In the five seasons leading up to the 2026 NFL season, Rousseau totaled 32 sacks with eight as the high-water mark (2022, 2024 seasons), also adding seven forced fumbles. His story told the tale of a very good player who trended a bit underappreciated.
Fast forward to September 2026 with Rousseau two games into his sixth NFL season, and the tale being told is one of far grander horizons. In the course of those two games in five days, Rousseau has put NFL offenses on notice.
Now making hay as an outside linebacker/edge rusher in a 3-4 base system coached by Jim Leonhard, it’s fair to say Rousseau’s feasting at the expense of nearly every offensive lineman in his path. His move off the line of scrimmage and out wider has allowed Rousseau’s explosion and length to carry him to new heights as a front seven defender.
Following the Bills’ win over the Detroit Lions in primetime for Week 2, Rousseau has now totaled four sacks in two games. That’s better than half his total from last season, and represents the total number of sacks he tallied his rookie season.
Rousseau’s now in rarified air where the only other Bills player to ever accomplish the same feat was Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Bruce Smith. That’s elite company, and speaks to the talent that president of football operations/general manager Brandon Beane saw out of Rousseau in the lead-up to the 2021 draft.
But Rousseau couldn’t have asked for a more productive start this season.
Against Detroit, Rousseau finished with two sacks, four quarterback hits, and two tackles for loss among three total tackles. Those sacks played a key role in dismantling Detroit’s offense in the first quarter, which ultimately proved to be too much of a hole to dig out of late in action.
In Week 1, Rousseau played the role of Grim Reaper, ending Houston’s opening drive with a strip sack that gave the ball back to Buffalo. Then during the final defensive stand against the Texans, Rousseau again bullied his way to another strip-sack and turnover, ending any chance of victory for the H-Town hopefuls.
It’s fair to wonder if the Bills win in Houston without those two plays by Rousseau. Despite that, he wasn’t named AFC Defensive Player of Week 1. Will he find his way to the award in Week 2? Playing on a national stage certainly helps. Instead, you can bet that Rousseau is focused only on winning and playing the final game of the season in Los Angeles, eschewing All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods in favor of that elusive Super Bowl win.
It still feels like Rousseau is one of the more underappreciated NFL players, but that may be about to change if his work in the first two games is an indication of the season ahead of him. Of course it’s unlikely he maintains such a pace through an entire 17-game season, but Rousseau is currently on pace to finish the regular season with 34 sacks.
