As a result, Clemson and head coach Dabo Swinney now head into the 2026 college football season with far more questions than answers. And those concerns have sparked criticism from around college football.
Chris Hummer Calls Out Head Coach Dabo Swinney For Clemson Tigers’ Recent Situation
Speaking on CBS Sports College Football, Chris Hummer questioned whether Swinney has assembled a roster capable of returning to the top.
“I think it’s built to compete,” Hummer said. “I don’t know if it’s built to win a national championship or a conference championship game just because of how expensive and loaded Miami is, but that alone signals a problem for Miami or for Clemson.”
This offseason, Swinney took a unique approach to build his squad. Instead of adding an experienced quarterback through the transfer portal, he trusted the talent already within the program.
So, now Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds will battle for the starting job. While the competition could produce a long-term answer, it also puts added pressure on a young quarterback room after last season’s disappointing finish.

Meanwhile, Clemson attacked the transfer portal differently than many of its biggest rivals. Although the Tigers brought in a program-record number of transfers, most additions were viewed as depth pieces or developmental prospects from smaller programs rather than established stars.
This strategy is not convincing, looking at the last season Clemson had. As mentioned earlier, they finished with a 7-5 regular season record and a 4-4 ACC mark before falling 22-10 to Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl to finish 7-6 overall.
It also marked the program’s worst record since 2010 and its first losing home season at Memorial Stadium since 1998. Because of that, Hummer also argued that the program’s standing within the conference has steadily slipped over the last few years.

“Clemson has shifted from being the most talented team in the ACC to being one of the most talented teams in the ACC to having a shot,” Hummer added. “And if you’re Clemson, you don’t really want to be in the having-a-shot category. Really, only five years removed from being one of the best teams in the country without question. And I think that’s the problem for Dabo Swinney.
“We’ve changed as a culture, as a college football community, changed our expectations for what Clemson can be. And I think if you’re Dabo Swinney and you’re looking in the mirror, like you’re the common denominator there, and you have to figure that out.”
Still, Swinney’s resume gives him plenty of credibility despite the recent struggles. During his time leading the Tigers, he has built one of college football’s most successful programs. He guided Clemson to two National Championship victories while compiling a remarkable 187-53 career record.

However, the Tigers are no longer receiving the benefit of the doubt simply because of their past success.
Now, Swinney must show that his roster-building strategy can produce wins again over the next season or two. Otherwise, the questions surrounding the program could grow even louder, and meaningful changes may no longer feel far away.
