Thomas Tuchel responds to Donald Trump after England World Cup criticism

Thomas Tuchel hit back at Donald Trump's critique of his tactical choices in England's World Cup semifinal loss to Argentina, brushing aside the president's remarks with a pointed question about his credentials as a soccer expert.
Trump had commented on Tuchel's second-half strategy during a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York on Friday, challenging why England captain Harry Kane had been deployed in defensive duties after the squad grabbed a 1-0 advantage, with the approach drawing criticism from multiple English stars.

"You have a great player in England, who I played golf with - you know that, right? Harry, who's been fantastic," Trump said. "I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player. What do I know about soccer? They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him on defense. We got to be a little offensive, right? But no, I'm not gonna call it. What do I know about coaching? I thought that was a little unusual, but Harry is a great guy actually."

When questioned about Trump's observations, Tuchel fired back with a cutting response of his own. "Do you use Donald Trump as your witness for the case?" Tuchel said.
He continued to justify Kane's location as an inevitable result of the squad's defensive structure rather than a tactical misstep, stating: "That's what you do if defend in a block. That's what team spirit and mentality is translated to. If we are pushed back in a deep block then Harry defends in a deep block."
He added: "It is our scar that we carry, as coach, as players. It is a very painful defeat which we have to carry, not the critics, not the experts."
Trump's remarks contributed to mounting pressure Tuchel has encountered following Wednesday's 2-1 loss, during which England took the lead through Anthony Gordon's 55th-minute strike before withdrawing into a progressively defensive formation, ultimately fielding six defenders as Argentina netted twice late on.
Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez nodded in a stoppage-time decider from a Lionel Messi delivery, propelling Argentina into Sunday's final against Spain.
Kane completed the contest with 26 touches, one off-target attempt, six defensive actions, and two successful duels, while his movement chart revealed him occupying roughly equivalent time in his own box as in Argentina's.
His most significant defensive moment occurred in the buildup to Elliot Anderson's 37th-minute caution, when Kane made a committed effort to recover and pressure Messi before Anderson's delayed challenge felled the Argentine.
Notwithstanding the criticism directed his way, reports suggest that Tuchel continues to enjoy the backing of the Football Association and is anticipated to stay on as England's head coach through Euro 2028, having previously put pen to paper on a contract extension covering that tournament.
Trump and Kane openly talked about playing a round of golf together approximately 18 months ago in West Palm Beach, a connection Trump directly referenced in his assessment of the England captain's tactical deployment.
