Aston Villa smash transfer record as Johan Manzambi signs in £59.5m deal

Johan Manzambi has said joining Aston Villa is the perfect plan for his career after becoming the club's record signing.

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Manzambi from SC Freiburg for a fee of £59.5m, with the midfielder signing a long-term deal.

Manzambi arrives at Villa after an impressive campaign at Freiburg, in which he scored seven times in 47 appearances and featured against Aston Villa in theEuropa League final. He was named the tournament's Young Player of the Season after shining during the German side's run to the decider.

The 20-year-old also impressed as Switzerland reached the World Cup quarter-finals this summer, scoring three times and adding two assists.

Manzambi opted to sign for Aston Villa despite rival interest from Newcastle United, who had agreed a deal with Freiburg for the midfielder.

Speaking toAVFC.co.uk, Manzambi said the lure of Champions League football was a big factor in his decision to join Villa.

“I have a big message: I’m very excited to be here and we know that together we can do big things," Manzambi said at his unveiling.

“I’m very excited to play in Villa Park. I am very, very happy and I am excited to play with this club.

“It’s a very big club in England, and they’re playing in the Champions League. I’ve already played against Aston Villa, and for me, it was the perfect plan.

“I hope I can play the same as in the World Cup and with Freiburg. I’m sure that with the team, the coach and the staff that I can do the same.”
