The Detroit Red Wings didn’t give Carter Mazur a qualifying offer Monday because they had bigger plans for him Wednesday.

GM Steve Yzerman gave Mazur, 24, a two-year deal worth $875,000 per season. No longer waiver-exempt, Mazur is expected to start the season on the Red Wings roster. To send him to the AHL next season, the Red Wings would have to put him through waivers.

The Red Wings like Mazur’s blend of physical play coupled with offensive instincts. However, there is concern about the fact Mazur has had difficulty staying healthy. Over the last two seasons, he has played a total of only 36 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins and nine with the Red Wings.

He registered no points for the Red Wings in eight games but showed 11 goals and five for 16 points in 16 games for Grand Rapids. He had five goals in playoff games. When he was with the Red Wings, he really didn’t get much of an opportunity to be a scorer.

The projection for the 197-pound Mazur is that he could post 150-plus hits and perhaps 15 goals as a younger player. The Red Wings want to be harder to play against and a line of Mazur, Marco Kasper and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard could generate 450 to 500 hits. If MBN fits better on another line, Emmitt Finne could also produce 150 hits on that.
