The Toronto Raptors have not been the most competitive team over the last few seasons as they have focused on developing talent. However, it is now time for them to seriously start competing again, and as an organization, they realized that during the summer.
They completed a trade to reunite with Kawhi Leonard. However, the two-time NBA champion has already suffered a knee injury.
“Kawhi Leonard will be sidelined for at least a week because of swelling in his left knee, the Toronto Raptors said Tuesday. Leonard, who has a long history of knee problems, was a late scratch from Toronto’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday. The Raptors said tests revealed there is no acute injury in his left knee,” NBA.com wrote.
Leonard hasn’t been the best at staying healthy over the last few years, and his injury concerns have continued to grow as he gets older. However, he wants to compete for a championship with the Raptors, and he made that clear. The only concern is that NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed Leonard would be sidelined longer than initially expected.
“Toronto Raptors star Kawhi Leonard (knee) is expected to be sidelined for at least 3-4 weeks, sources tell me,” Haynes posted.
On Tuesday night, the Raptors provided an important update on Leonard’s progress, offering promising signs that he could return within the next couple of weeks.
“The Raptors say Kawhi Leonard has successfully completed treatment for his left knee swelling and will begin the return to play process. His status will be updated in one week,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.
Toronto isn't going to throw the veteran straight into the fire, but when he is available, he will be a difference-maker. The Raptors have plenty of offensive talent; they just need another great defender.
Leonard makes the team even better, which is why a deal for another star-caliber player could happen at the trade deadline. For now, it is great news that Leonard is beginning the process of working his way back to action.
