Quenton Nelson, Colts were close to a contract extension in the offseason, per report

After the Indianapolis Colts fired general manger Chris Ballard 10 days ago, it sent a ripple effect down the organization. Coming off a second-half letdown and loss to the then 0-5 Tennessee Titans, it seemed clear that changes were imminent.
Tuesday, the Colts traded Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, a franchise cornerstone on the offensive line since Indianapolis drafted him with the No. 6 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. With uncertainty surrounding the future of the organization, rumors began to swirl about trade requests regarding some of the Colts' most important players.

ESPN NFL insider Ian Rapoport joined the Pat McAfee show Wednesday and shed some light on Nelson's situation in Indianapolis.
"Is that accurate? He wanted to get a deal done with Indianapolis this off-season," McAfee asked Rapoport.
"Yeah, that is true." Rapoport replied. "When Chris Ballard was there, I really thought it was going to get done."
"I really thought the Quenton Nelson deal was gonna get done with the Colts this offseason..

Nelson didn't sign an extension. He is currently on the final year of a four-year, $80 million contract, his first large-scale extension following his rookie contract. According to Rapoport, it was up to Nelson if he would be spending the next several years with the Colts' organization.
In return for the All-Pro guard, the Colts received a 2027 third round pick and 2028 fifth round pick from Seattle.
"This is a huge bounty for someone in the middle of the season," Rapoport added. "A lot of people wanted this guy that the Seahawks think is like really, really going to help their run game."
Since arriving in Indianapolis, Nelson was selected to the Pro Bowl each of his eight seasons and was named an All-Pro in six of those.
Just a short time after Nelson's trade, the Colts moved another key piece of the roster in DeForest Buckner, who returns to the organization that drafted him, the San Francisco 49ers. Indianapolis received a 2027 fourth-round pick.
With uncertainty surrounding the organization, there is reason to believe the roster moves won't stop here. Nonetheless, it was an offensive pillar that may have set off a revolving door of player personnel in Indianapolis.
