Monroe football takes 19-game win streak into Section V playoffs

· Yahoo Sports

When the Monroe Red Jackets began to warm up for their football regular-season finale, the team's winning streak appeared to be in jeopardy.

But the danger was gone after just two plays from scrimmage.

Monroe quickly built a two-touchdown lead and went on to defeat state-ranked Class AA Canisius 42-15 for its 19th consecutive victory. The defending Class B state champions haven't lost since 2024.

The Red Jackets showed little, if any, rust after playing no games the prior two weeks. A forfeit and a game canceled just before the start of the season left Monroe idle, but the Red Jackets looked prepared for the postseason. Monroe, the top seed in Section V Class B, hosts No. 8 Waterloo/Mynderse, 6 p.m. Oct. 30.

"I think we're ready for sectionals. I know we're ready," Monroe quarterback Terrell Cunningham Jr., a senior, said. "We just have to keep working, keep preparing for everybody else."

The final standings for the Section V Class B Tournament left Monroe (7-0) and East High/World of Inquiry (5-2), a team the Red Jackets defeated by a score of 12-7 Sept. 18, on the same side of the bracket. That means a rematch of the teams in the Rochester City School District could take place in the semifinals.

"Yes, yes we've got everybody on the clock," Monroe defensive back/receiver James Brumfield said when asked if the Red Jackets are ready for the postseason.

Brumfield was one of 11 players in the Monroe-Buffalo Canisius game considered prospects to play college football either at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) or Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) levels. Buffalo Canisius running back Elijah Kimble has committed to play for Syracuse University.

A junior who in August had 20 offers to play on scholarship, Brumfield returned two interceptions for touchdowns - 59, then 67 yards - and had three receptions for 67 yards, including a touchdown.
