Detroit Lions defensive end DJ Wonnum was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week on Wednesday, Oct. 28, after he blocked a late field goal in the Lions' win over the Green Bay Packers.

Wonnum got two fingers on a 35-yard field goal try by Trey Smack four plays after the Packers stopped the Lionson fourth-and-1 from their own 24-yard line in a tie game late in the fourth quarter.

The Lions followed Wonnum's block with a 10-play drive that ended in Jake Bates' game-winning field goal as time expired, and several players said after they game they didn't even realize Wonnum tipped the ball.

"Did he block it?" Lions quarterback Jared Goff said after the game. "Amazing, yeah, I didn’t know he blocked it. That’s awesome. That’s a huge individual effort. The field goals from there typically are pretty high percentage, and to be able to get the ball back − to miss that fourth down conversion and get the ball back with no harm, no foul, again hat’s off to our defense and DJ there with the block."

Wonnum, who's tied for the team lead with five sacks, is the second Lions player to win a player of the week award this season.

Jahmyr Gibbs was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week after he ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions' Week 5 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
