Jason Benetti, who calls Lions preseason games on television in addition to his work for NBC and the Detroit Tigers, filled in for Miller on Sunday.
“Our thoughts are with Dan right now, all weekend, and for the future, with the loss of his wife of 33 years, Cindy, a couple of days ago,” Benetti said during the pregame show on 97.1 The Ticket, per MLive. “Dan is one of the most remarkable people I have met in my time in Detroit. One of the most sincere human beings you can possibly dream of, a fantastic voice of the Lions for more than two decades. And it is very hard to have him be at home under the circumstances. His kids, Sammi and Rikky and Tony and Robbie, Cindy and Dan’s grandkids — Daphne and Cecilia — and their entire family, our hearts are with you.”
Additionally, Lions head coach Dan Campbell and quarterback Jared Goff went out of their way to deliver heartfelt messages for Miller and his family after Detroit’s 45-21 win over Arizona.
An emotional Campbell opened his press conference by announcing that the Lions’ game ball “goes to Dan Miller and his family.”
“It was hard to hear what they went through,” Campbell said. “It’s been a tough road for Dan. It’s for him. Salt of the earth, man. Dan is salt of the earth. Dan is salt of the earth. I know that this has been hard. But now I know somebody’s at peace. We love you, Dan. Appreciate you.”
A choked-up #Lions HC Dan Campbell announced that he’s giving a game ball to team play-by-play announcer Dan Miller, who lost his wife to cancer this week.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff also got emotional in his postgame interview with Fox.
“We’re thinking about Dan. Yeh, sorry,” Goff said, fighting back tears. “Yeah, we’re thinking about you, Dan. Love you, man.
“Yeah, he’s just an important piece of the culture here,” Goff continued. “He really is. His voice is Lions football. He means a lot to us. He’s a part of our family. I talk to him weekly. I know he’s in our hearts right now and all of our prayers.”
