EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Michigan State was a successful two-point conversion away from its first Big Ten win of the season.

The conversion came up short though and the Spartans fell to Illinois in overtime, 38-37. It's the fourth straight loss for MSU.

The Spartans trailed by 17 points in the first half and trailed by 14 points in the fourth quarter. A touchdown by Jaziun Patterson with under two minutes to play in regulation tied the game at 31 and ultimately sent the game to OT.

Illinois scored on its first play in overtime and the Spartans responded with another Patterson touchdown to make it 38-37. MSU would go for two and the win but would fail to convert.

Pat Fitzgerald said postgame going for two was the right call given the amount of injuries the Spartans had on defense. Linebackers Jordan Hall and Brady Pretzlaff, and defensive backs Charles Brantley and Tre Bell left the game with injuries and did not return.

Michigan State will look to get back on track when former Spartan quarterback Aidan Chiles and Northwestern come to East Lansing next week.
