Following the tragic death of Yorktown football senior defensive end Chris Wilson, The Star Press has opted to cancel the IU Health Football Player and Athlete of the Week polls for Sept. 28-Oct. 3. Wilson has been named the honorary Football Player of the Week for Week 7.

Wilson logged 12 tackles and a sack through five games this season. As a junior, he recorded 25 tackles with four sacks and an interception as he helped lead Yorktown to its first sectional championship at the Class 4A level. Wilson was a 4-star recruit β€” the first-ever 4-star football recruit out of Delaware County β€” and had committed to continue his football career at West Virginia.

Wilson was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds on the morning of Monday, Oct. 5. Muncie Police are actively investigating the shooting, and anyone with information is asked the call the MPD detective division at 765-747-4867.

Yorktown principal Stacey Brewer acknowledged Wilson's passing in a statement to Yorktown parents and students on Monday morning, calling Wilson, "a valued member of our school, our football team, and our community." Yorktown football head coach Mike Wilhelm also commented on the tragedy in a separate statement.

"He was highly respected because he treated others with love and kindness," Wilhelm said. "Uncommonly, he never sought out the attention that came with being a high Division-1 football recruit. He showed up every day and worked hard to get better. Our team has lost a brother, and we will carry him with us forever."

"The West Virginia Football program is heartbroken by the news of the tragic loss of Chris Wilson Jr. this morning," Rodriguez said. "We really enjoyed getting to know Chris during the recruiting process. The WVU football program sends its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Chris' family in this difficult time.
