Delaware County emergency dispatchers received a report of a shooting at 2:59 a.m., the deputy chief said.

The teen had been shot multiple times, she said.

Wilson, considered the highest-rated football recruit in East Central Indiana, had committed to attend West Virginia University.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked the call the MPD detective division at 765-747-4867.

In a Monday message to Yorktown parents and students, Stacey Brewer, Yorktown High School principal, acknowledged Wilson's passing.

"With great sadness, I share that Chris Wilson, a senior at Yorktown High School, died tragically early this morning," she wrote.

The principal called Wilson "a valued member of our school, our football team, and our community."

"Our hearts are with his family, friends and teammates," she added.

Yorktown schools are on fall break this week. Brewer said counselors will be available to students when classes resume.

"If your student needs immediate help, call or text 988," she wrote.
