The San Diego Padres were so close to tying the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers, as closer Mason Miller brought Milwaukee to their final out of the night on Sunday in Game 2 with the Padres up by one, 3-2. Alas, pitching two innings seemed to reduce Miller’s effectiveness drastically. Miller allowed three walks in the bottom of the ninth, and with two outs and the bases loaded, he faced Jackson Chourio, which spelled doom for the Padres.

Chourio hit a 101.3 mph single right up the middle for a base hit with the Brewers down to their final strike, and this scored two for Milwaukee — handing the Padres their second loss in this best-of-five series.

While the series is not yet over, especially with the NLDS shifting to Petco Park for Game 3 and, if necessary, Game 4, David Ortiz, the three-time World Series champion with the Boston Red Sox, believes that the Padres may as well be packing their bags for Cancun.

“I’m sorry, guys. I have to break it to you. I have so much love for San Diego and everything. But golly, you were supposed to win this game. Now, you are against the rope. It’s over. I’m sorry,” Ortiz declared, via FOX Sports on X.

“You were supposed to be flying to San Diego dancing on the airplane tonight and you let that one get away from you. Now they gonna have to face Jacob (Misiorowski) again, if they even get there.”

The Padres were so much better at home (51-30) than they were on the road this year (40-41), so the series is far from over. They will also have Nick Pivetta starting on the mound against Dustin May for Game 3 (May has an ERA of 4.70 on the season), so San Diego should at least leave it all on the line in Game 3 on Tuesday.

Now, Ortiz has given the Padres some bulletin board material, which should ignite their competitive fire even further as they try to pull off an upset against MLB’s best team in 2026.
