· Yahoo Sports

Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers played their first NBA preseason game on Monday. They secured a 127-103 win over the Sacramento Kings, thanks to Doncic’s 21-point performance. It was a promising start to the 2026-27 season, as they showed promise in the new era of Lakers basketball.

Head coach JJ Redick spoke highly of Doncic for the work that he put in over the summer. The Slovenian star shed off some weight to stay in peak physical form. Redick recognized the dedication of the six-time All-Star, and that was what he spoke to the media about after the win over the Kings.

“He’s great physically. The guy worked his butt off all summer,” Redick said. “Stayed in shape and actually ran this summer. He actually did some sprints and stuff. He came into camp in fantastic shape.”

“For someone who normally plays a ton of basketball, he didn’t do as much of that this summer, by design.”

Redick said that it was Luka Doncic’s ultimate goal during the summer. This was the reason why he remained committed to a healthier and more active lifestyle, even when he’s not playing basketball.

Doncic is now the Lakers’ best player after LeBron James joined the Philadelphia 76ers over the summer. Although it’s just the first preseason game, he showed he’s committed to leading by example ahead of the new season.

LA’s next game is on Tuesday against the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center in San Francisco.

Luka Doncic Missed Playing Basketball

While Doncic stayed in shape during the offseason, he did not play basketball. He did not suit up for the Slovenian Men’s National Basketball Team for the FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification games in Europe. The six-time All-NBA star decided to stay away from the sport and spend time with his two daughters.

After months, Doncic finally played on Monday. He told reporters how much he missed basketball.

“I missed a lot. Basketball is one of the best things in my life — It’s been five, six months. Being back for the games, being competitive, it’s just a lot of fun for me and I’m really happy to be back,” the European star said.

Doncic finally played basketball at the NBA level. Although he had scrimmages with his teammates, facing a different NBA team is still different. The new-look Lakers team looks promising as they enter the post-LeBron James era.
