Sophie Cunningham Appears to Troll A’ja Wilson After Heated Fan Clash

· Yahoo Sports

Sophie Cunningham may have found a new way to keep the “point” controversy alive, this time with A’ja Wilson seemingly in her sights.

The Indiana Fever guard posted a TikTok that appeared to draw a connection between her own viral on-court gesture and Wilson’s heated confrontation with a fan during Game 2.

The timing was hard to ignore, with the Fever and Las Vegas Aces preparing for a decisive Game 3.

Sophie Cunningham already knows how quickly a single gesture can take on a life of its own.

Her “point” toward Phoenix Mercury player DeWanna Bonner became a viral moment after it sparked on-court contention, making the gesture part of the growing conversation around Cunningham.

That history gives her latest TikTok a different context. Without directly naming Wilson, the 30-year-old appeared to revive the subject while commenting on how unexpectedly relevant the “point” had become again.

“Not trying to be dramatic at all, like seriously,” she started, adding, “I was just here having my morning coffee and what a damn comeback year for the ‘point.’ Who would have ever thought? Just who would have ever thought?”

The reference appeared to connect Cunningham’s previous incident with what happened to Wilson during Game 2, after a Fever fan allegedly recreated Cunningham’s point pose toward the Aces star.

Sophie Cunningham’s post quickly drew reactions from fans who appeared to understand the reference and were more than willing to keep the joke going.

One commenter wrote, “How can u not love the point, you’ve been a tremendous piece for the comeback.”

Another appeared to make the connection even more directly, writing, “I honestly was just cooking and it clicked in what you said.. thats crazy yup the point..hahaha.”

The reactions then took a more pointed turn as some fans began looking ahead to Game 3 in Las Vegas.

“In game 3 at Vegas, every single Fever fan should point at Aja during every one of her free throws because you know she’s going to have a lot of free throws,” one person wrote.

Another commenter questioned how much meaning could be attached to the gesture in the first place, writing, “It’s crazy how just pointing at someone sends them into a frenzy.. guess fans can point at players anymore. Keep it up!!”

Sophie Cunningham’s Post Follows A’JaWilson’s Exchange With A Fan

🚨 I JUST WATCHED THE VIDEO AGAIN.

A’ja Wilson did not simply walk toward the sideline and exchange words with a fan.

She walked PAST THE FRONT ROW and into the SECOND ROW to confront him.

That distinction is important.

As The Blast reported, the incident involving Wilson unfolded while the Aces trailed the Indiana Fever in the fourth quarter.

According to footage, a fan seated in the second row appeared to take two small steps toward Wilson while saying, “That’s on you,” before Wilson moved toward him and pointed back.

The exchange quickly drew attention when two of Wilson’s teammates, an assistant coach, and security personnel intervened. Security eventually escorted the fan from courtside while Indiana led 90-79 with 4:10 remaining.

Wilson was assessed a technical foul but remained in the game. The team later addressed the situation, saying, “Following a report of a comment directed toward a player, arena security spoke with the fan involved and witnesses.”

They added, “Security determined there was no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct, the fan was not removed from the arena. We consider the matter closed.”

A’Ja Wilson subsequently explained why the interaction crossed a line for her, emphasizing that she objected to the fan approaching and pointing at her.

“I’m not going to get into the [expletive]. I’m just trying to play my game,” she began.

She then described the situation from her perspective, saying, “But if I’m just walking cause I just got the foul, I’m chilling, and I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said, I don’t give a damn how you said it, the tone – that is unacceptable.”

Wilson also questioned how the fan was able to return to the game after the incident. In her words, “And how he gets back in the game? Cause they said he didn’t do anything.”

She apologized to her teammates for receiving the technical foul but remained firm about the boundary she felt had been crossed.

Against that backdrop, Cunningham’s TikTok landed just before the Fever and Aces’ next match in a win-or-go-home Game 3. The sixth-seeded Fever and third-seeded Aces are both fighting to advance to the WNBA semifinals.

Jackie Young’s Fan Clash Adds To WNBA’s Courtside Tension

The “point” controversy surrounding Sophie Cunningham is hardly the only recent example of tensions boiling over between WNBA players and fans.

According to PEOPLE, Jackie Young found herself at the center of another courtside incident during the Las Vegas Aces’ 86-84 overtime win over the Indiana Fever on August 6, when a fan’s repeated comments prompted Young to alert officials and briefly stop play.

Security became involved, although the Fever later said the fan had not violated its code of conduct.

The incident occurred during the third quarter with 4:38 remaining. Young, who had been dealing with what she described as ongoing “chirping” from the courtside fans, eventually alerted a referee after one comment went too far.

“He was just chirping all game,” Young said. “I let him have it, and then he just made one that was a little bit too far.”

Play was stopped while officials and arena security addressed the situation. Officials initially escorted a woman through a tunnel before allowing her to return to her seat, while they later escorted two nearby men away.

The identities of the fans were not publicly disclosed, and Young declined to say exactly what was said. The Fever later clarified that the fan was not formally ejected.
