The seniors from Saint John and Geneva, respectively, advanced based on results from Tuesday’s Division II first day of play at The College of Wooster.

If both win semifinals match, they would play for first; if both lost, they would go for third and fourth.

Hoza and Thompson, along with Orange’s Geneieve Hayden and Central Christian’s Mary Miedel, are all scheduled to play Oct. 9 and 10 at Springdale Athletic Club in Akron for a state trip.

The Heralds and Eagles competed in The College of Wooster Sectional Tuesday.

Hoza, as the second seed, earned wins over Geneva’s Parker Miller 6-1, 6-0, West Holmes’ Nevaeh Markel 6-0, 6-0 and Marlington’s Isabel Christian 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semifinals.

“I’m extremely proud of myself to reach this level, and I am blessed to get this opportunity again,” Hoza said. “I thank my coaches and team for pushing me to be my best, and I look forward to the future.’

She is scheduled to play No. 3 seed Miedel in one semifinal match.

“Maggie has had an outstanding senior season, and qualifying for districts for the second time is a great accomplishment,” Heralds coach Todd Nassief said. “She’s worked extremely hard, competes with confidence and composure, and I’m really proud of the way she represents Saint John.”

Thompson, the fourth seed, defeated Chippewa’s Madilyn Underwood 6-0, 6-0, Tallmadge’s Cassie Bishop 6-0, 6-1 and Saint John’s Juliana Beltvaski 6-2, 6-0 en route to the semifinals.

“I went into sectionals not having any expectations, and aimed just to play my hardest,” Thompson said. “After my first match against Chippewa, I felt pretty good, and had high hopes for the next match against Tallmadge.”

Thompson’s confidence gained with that victory.

“I realized ‘this match determines whether or not I make it’, so I had to dig deep, and play my game more than ever. And I did that, and I couldn’t be more happy and proud.”

Thompson, who will make her first district appearance, is slated to go against Hayden, the top seed, in the other semi.

“I’m ecstatic I have made it this far,” Thompson said. “I earned this opportunity my senior year after working as hard as I have over the course of my tennis career.”

Jefferson, Conneaut and Edgewood competed at the D-II Hawken site.

For the Falcons, Sienna Paxson and Mackenzie Kovach won both of their doubles matches to reach the quarterfinal round. But the duo’s season ended Wednesday with a 6-0. 6-0 loss to top-seeded Gilmour Academy’s Grier Peckman and Abigail Lynch.

The Spartans and Warriors were both shut out of district competition.

On Monday, Lakeside and Madison didn’t advance any players to the district from the D-I Solon Sectional site.
