The Chicago Bears have a lot riding on Caleb Williams. He is destined for an MVP season, and head coach Ben Johnson could be Coach of the Year.

However, Johnson has been adamant that Williams needs to improve in one aspect of the game that Aaron Rodgers mastered, per Dan Wiederer of The Athletic. While at Halas Hall, Johnson observed tapes of Rodgers during his heyday with the Green Bay Packers.

He recognized Rodgers’ ability to run an offense smoothly through extended play. He could run out of the pocket and throw downfield well.

“They were very defined with what they were doing,” Johnson says. “You could tell they coached it. You could tell Aaron really believed this was a big play waiting to happen — whether it’s a throw down the field or whether it’s a chance for (defensive pass interference). And all their guys reacted that way.”

Overall, Rodgers embodied the efficiency, speed, and urgency Johnson wants Williams to pick up.

“These are great opportunities for big plays,” Johnson says, “particularly with the style of quarterback Caleb is. We’ve got to use that.”

Last season, Williams completed only 40% of passes thrown downfield when he ran out of the pocket.

One criticism of Williams is his hesitancy to throw out of the pocket. Last year, Williams recorded 363 scramble yards along with 3 rushing touchdowns. He threw for 3,942 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in 17 games.

The Bears begin their season on Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.
