Western Michigan makes the short trip to Ann Arbor in Week 1, hoping to stage a surprise against No. 16 Michigan, who is making its debut under new head coach Kyle Whittingham. The Wolverines cut ties with Sherrone Moore back in December and begin anew with Whittingham in the hopes of returning to the NCAA’s pinnacle.
The Big Ten contender will aim to flex some muscle against a local rival, but Michigan would be wise to steer clear of any arrogance in Whittingham’s curtain-raiser. The Broncos have never managed to beat Michigan in eight contests to date but are coming off the back of a Mid-American Conference Championship, as well as obliterating Kennesaw State 41-6 to lift the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
Bryce Underwood has already made history before stepping onto the field in Week 1, voted by his teammates to become Michigan’s first sophomore captain in the modern age. The 19-year-old quarterback led the Wolverines to a 9-4 record as a freshman, completing 11 touchdown passes and rushing for another six, but he’ll have much greater aspirations in mind for 2026 with that experience in tow.
Meanwhile, the Broncos will hope to get the most out of a running game that finished 16th overall in college football last term and averaged 204 yards per game. Quarterback Broc Lowry was voted the MAC’s Offensive Player of the Year and combined with RB Jalen Buckley for almost 2,000 yards rushing between them alone.
