Duke football is back as the Blue Devils prepare to host the Tulane Green Wave in a Week 1 matchup. A new season brings plenty of change, including a new signal caller and receiving corps, for a Duke team looking to build on last year’s ACC championship.

Few players on either team took part in last year's matchup, when Tulane handed Duke a 34-27 loss in New Orleans, but the returning Blue Devils should have a chip on their shoulder entering the rematch. Duke struggled to contain the quarterback on the ground, allowing former Tulane quarterback Jake Retzlaff to rush for four touchdowns. New Green Wave starter Zeon Chriss-Gremillion isn't the physical runner Retzlaff was, but he's more dynamic and explosive, making him a player Manny Diaz's defense must focus on containing, particularly linebackers Nick Morris Jr., Luke Mergott, Kendall Johnson and Bradley Gompers.

Duke star running back Nate Sheppard surely remembers the matchup, as he posted a then-season-high nine touches for 96 total yards and a touchdown in what became his breakout performance. Sheppard's role in the Blue Devils' offense only grew from there, and as he looks to build on last year's success, another explosive performance against Tulane would be an ideal start.

  • Duke 27, Tulane 20: Both the Blue Devils and Green Wave underwent dramatic changes this summer. With Jon Sumrall now at Florida and the loss of starting quarterback Jake Retzlaff along with all but five starters, Tulane is searching for an entirely new identity. Duke faces its own continuity questions but has the steady presence of head coach Manny Diaz, who has an opportunity to return to his defensive roots with this year's team. The Blue Devils also return twice as many starters, and with the rematch taking place in Durham, the most significant advantages appear to favor Duke. - Zach Ciavolella
