Ex-Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin Reveals Shocking Sacrifice Made During 19-Year NFL Career

Mike Tomlin stepped down from the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching job in January, one day after a 30-6 wild-card playoff exit against the Houston Texans. It ended his  19-season journey with the franchise that included a Super Bowl title, eight AFC North crowns, and 13 playoff berths.

Tomlin has since traded the headset for a TV microphone, signing on as a studio analyst for NBC’s “Football Night in America” ahead of the 2026 season. With the grueling grind of training camps and NFL schedules behind him, Tomlin has spent this year’s offseason enjoying his free time.

He recently spoke openly about using the year to focus on his personal wellness and reconnect with people he missed out on seeing while running the organization. His family is also enjoying his new lifestyle.

Mike Tomlin shares family reaction to first reunion in decades

Appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, Tomlin opened up about how much the job had quietly cost him outside of football. 

“I’ve enjoyed 2026, man,” Tomlin said. “The free time, had an opportunity to really just focus on my wellness, getting into shape and things of that nature.” 

Without any hesitation, he admitted that running an entire NFL organization usually meant putting his own needs at the very bottom of the priority list. 

“Man, when you lead a football team and football organization, sometimes you put yourself last,” he added. “So it’s been good to kind of focus on some things like that and really just have time to be present with my family and friends.”

The former NFL coach missed decades of family reunions because of his grueling football schedule. When he finally showed up to one recently for the first time in 29 years, his relatives found his sudden free time hilarious.

“I went to a family reunion a couple weeks ago. I hadn’t been to a family reunion since 1997,” Tomlin said. “The family reunion is always the third week in July. Where have I been all of my adult life the third week in July? In a football camp. My family was laughing that I was there.”


The 54-year-old was hired by the Steelers in 2007 as the league’s youngest head coach and finished with a 193-114-2 regular-season record, never posting a losing year. He has said the lack of recent playoff success influenced his decision to step away, telling NBC’s Maria Taylor there’s “a loneliness with leadership” and that it felt like the right time for both himself and the organization. 

For now, he is settled into his new studio role with NBC, while a potential return to coaching remains an open question down the road. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy has taken over the reins to lead the Steelers into the post-Tomlin era.
