Celtic interest in Manchester United left-back Harry Amass revealed after transfer window

Celtic were reportedly among more than a dozen clubs interested in signing Manchester United left-back Harry Amass during the summer transfer window…

The Hoops spent much of the window searching for reinforcements on the left side of defence after it became clear Marcelo Saracchi would not be returning to Parkhead.

Amass emerged as one potential option, with The Athletic reporting that Celtic expressed an interest in the highly-rated 19-year-old following his successful loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

The youngster had been expected to leave Old Trafford permanently this summer, but Manchester United’s failure to bring in another left-back means he is now set to remain at the club.

Celtic were far from alone in pursuing Amass. Stoke City, Birmingham City, Millwall, QPR and Burnley were also interested, with the latter reportedly having a £3.5million bid rejected.

Sporting in Portugal and recently-relegated Bundesliga side Wolfsburg were among his admirers on the continent.

United had explored strengthening the position themselves and held contact with rivals Manchester City over a possible late move for Rayan Ait-Nouri, but no deal materialised.

Celtic eventually addressed their own left-back shortage by completing a season-long loan deal for Chelsea youngster Landon Emenalo following weeks of delays caused by an injury.

Emenalo and fellow Chelsea loanee Shim Mheuka were both added to Martin O’Neill’s squad on Wednesday after completing straight season-long loan moves.

Former Celtic defender Greg Taylor was another option considered for a Parkhead return, but PAOK were unwilling to sanction his departure, with new boss Alessio Lisci also viewing the 28-year-old as a potential midfield option.

Emenalo and Mheuka were among a late flurry of Celtic arrivals, with Sam Johnstone, Joel van den Berg and Jordan Lotomba also joining before the transfer window closed.
