The Kansas City Chiefs were unsure if they would have Patrick Mahomes back by the time the season rolled around. As a result, they were forced to look at backup options for the quarterback spot, with Justin Fields becoming a key free-agent signing.

Unfortunately, through two preseason games, he hasn’t blown the fan base away.

Moreover, an uneven performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers left a lot to be desired, leading fans to vent their frustrations on social media.

Justin Fields Isn’t Winning Over Chiefs Kingdom

A first-round pick for the Chicago Bears, Fields had a ton of potential due to his dual-threat style. But it never translated to the NFL, as he added stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets to his resume along the way.

Throughout his career, he’s never finished higher than #19 in PFN’s QB Impact Metrics. But for a team trying to incorporate more of a ground game in their offense, the Chiefs saw the upside in adding Fields to that playstyle.

But without Mahomes standing under center, the state of the offense with Fields has been abysmal. After rookie Garrett Nussmeier stole the show last week, the veteran quarterback turned in a wildly uneven night against the Buccaneers.

Completing nine of 12 passes for 64 yards, alongside a 15-yard rush, should have given fans some optimism. But two brutal sacks cost the Chiefs 23 yards and derailed two promising drives, including one that had them starting at 3rd-and-goal.

That particular play left everyone concerned, as one fan bemoaned, “Justin Fields, what are we doing?” It wasn’t an isolated comment, as a meme page outright called him “blind” for the cartoonish sack.

Even his most ardent supporters found the mistakes hard to defend. As Lexi Osbourne confessed, “I’m rooting so hard for Justin Fields but oh no lol,” she was joined by Price Carter, who added, “I was about to say something nice about Justin Fields, but I take it back.”

A key figure in Kansas City sports, Mark Poulose, was already done with Fields being a key player on the roster. He claimed, “Justin Fields is unplayable. Just a ridiculous sack to take.”

For most people, though, the two preseason games had given them a different conclusion. As one fan stated, “Nussmeier > Fields. Not a debate at this point.” Last week, the rookie went 13-of-19, tallying almost 100 passing yards.

Nussmeier’s pocket presence, awareness, and accuracy impressed folks, and he tried to make a similar impact this week. It remains to be seen if the Chiefs actually make a change on the depth chart to promote Nussmeier in the QB2 role. But it looks like the fan base has already made up its mind.
