For viewers at home, however, the game will change locations — from Netflix to NBC, which will televise next year’s game between the Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals.

To have the Red Sox take the field in Iowa, in a place that reminds us why people fall in love with baseball, will be incredibly special,” Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said in a statement. “Part of what has allowed baseball to endure for generations is its ability to evolve while still holding onto the traditions, memories, and shared experiences that give the game its meaning. We can’t wait to experience that in Dyersville with our players, our fans, and baseball fans everywhere.”

We are thrilled to showcase our athletes through one of Major League Baseball’s most cherished events and helping to grow the game to a worldwide audience,” Royals President of Business Operations Cullen Maxey said. “Royals territory already covers the Midwest, including Dyersville, so this is a natural fit that provides Royals fans a chance to cheer on the home team in a magical setting.”

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on Thursday, Aug. 13 in the third-ever installment of the game, which was inspired by Canadian novelist W.P. Kinsella’s 1982 novel Shoeless Joe and its 1989 film adaptation.

The 2027 game will be played on Aug. 12. The first edition was supposed to take place in August 2020, but MLB moved back the inaugural game between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The White Sox won that game, 9-8.

The game returned to Fox in August 2022, when the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2. Thursday’s game between the Phillies and Twins brought the event back after a four-year absence.
