It is no secret that the Los Angeles Lakers have been in full-blown pursuit of Jonathan Kuminga for the last two months, but the entire process has gone absolutely nowhere. It has been frustrating for the Lakers, but for various reasons, getting a deal done has not worked out.
Kuminga has been LA’s top priority throughout the summer. However, the Lakers are now being urged to shift their focus toward Klay Thompson.
“Obviously, anything can change during the NBA offseason, as Kuminga could have a change of heart or decide Los Angeles is the best situation for him, but it seems like it is time for the storied franchise to move on. Perhaps the Lakers should focus on trading for Klay Thompson or P.J. Washington, both of whom have experience playing with Doncic," SI's Ryan Ward wrote.
Over the summer, it has been unclear whether Thompson will be traded or bought out by the Dallas Mavericks. It has been reported that the four-time NBA champion is open to landing in Los Angeles.
“My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote.
Thompson's father, Mychal Thompson, is a Lakers legend who won two championships with Los Angeles. Fans have been asking him about getting his son to join the Lakers through a buyout or trade, and his response made it very clear that he is trying to talk his son into it.
“I’m TRYING,” Thompson posted.
There is no doubt that Mychal would love to see Klay wear the purple and gold, but the decision will ultimately be in the Mavericks' hands unless a buyout happens. However, nothing is going to stop him from recruiting his son to the organization where he enjoyed championship success during his own career.
Klay has made $298 million in contracts throughout his career. The four-time NBA champion is a lethal shooter, and a generational one at that. It would be a special homecoming for Klay to join the organization he spent his childhood watching while his biggest hero played for the Lakers.
