German killer nurse looking at more murder charges, dating back to 2010

A convicted nurse is under suspicion for additional deaths at a German hospital.
On Monday, German authorities said they were investigating dozens of cases, which could be related to a palliative care nurse already in jail for murdering 10 patients.
The man, identified by some media outlets as Ulrich S., worked at a hospital in Wuerselen, near the city of Aachen, Germany. He was convicted on 10 counts of murder and 27 counts of attempted murder back in November.
Authorities said the crimes were committed between December 2023 and May 2024 in a clinic near Aachen, located near the Belgian border in the western portion of the country.
German prosecutors in the earlier trial said he injected mostly elderly patients with sedatives and painkillers to reduce his workload during night shifts.
At the time of his conviction, German media reported that the authorities were looking into other crimes involving this palliative care nurse.
Prosecutors are now saying the man could be possibly linked to 121 additional cases and that new charges could be filed against him next year.
Approximately 40 bodies have been exhumed as part of this new investigation, covering events as far back as September of 2022.
Authorities in Cologne are also investigating 18 additional cases, dating back to 2010. The German media said the killer nurse, prior to gaining employment at the Wuerselen hospital, worked at a clinic in Cologne.
Other heinous cases
This is the second case in recent times where a German nurse was convicted of killing patients under care.
In 2019, Niels Hoegel was handed a life sentence for murdering 85 patients. Heigel killed his patients with lethal injection between 2000 and 2005, before he was caught.
And last month, a palliative care doctor in Berlin was found guilty of murdering 15 people with killer doses of sedatives.
The 41-year-old known as Johannes M. confessed to killing a dozen patients during home visits. He claimed he had convinced himself he was doing the right thing and sparing patients suffering and illness. In several cases, he allegedly set fire to their apartments in an attempt to cover up the killings.
He is also a suspect in several other related cases.
