Commanders' Amik Robertson playing up to Dan Quinn's motto

The Washington Commanders are officially underway at training camp. The team has gotten through a couple of days of practice, and it's been fun to watch so far.

One thing that has been noticeable so far is how tough the defense is. So far, the defense has won both days of practice, and that was even more obvious on Thursday. Veteran wide receiver Terry McLaurin admitted that the offense got beat, so cornerback Amik Robertson was asked about his thoughts.

This is Robertson's first camp with the Commanders, and he likes the competitiveness he's seeing from his teammates.

"Guys like that (the offense) are going to respond," Robertson said. "So, Terry and Jayden may be laughing now, but they're going to be back tomorrow. That's why the defense has to stay on it, man."

Robertson and McLaurin have had some friendly back-and-forth, and it's clear there's good chemistry across the roster. McLaurin is also very experienced, though, so you know he's going to compete every single day.

"Dan Quinn always preaches 'competitive, bad mother*******," Robertson explained. "So some days offense is going to win, some days defense is going to win. But we all win, because we elevate one another."

That's a great quote from a veteran defender who will play a big role this season. It's clear that the players are still buying into Quinn's philosophy. It's also a good sign that players are clearly not having any issues getting adjusted to Daronte Jones' new scheme.

Robertson is on track to be the starting nickel corner in his first season with the Commanders after spending the previous two seasons with the Detroit Lions.

In 2025, Robertson played in all 17 games and racked up 52 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and one interception. That performance netted the veteran a two-year, $15 million deal with the Commanders this offseason. The hope is that Robertson will handle the nickel spot after Mike Sainristil struggled in that role a year ago.
