Elle Duncan Draws Criticism For What She Said About Caitlin Clark After The USA Today Controversy

The latest controversy surrounding Caitlin Clark stems from two widely criticised USA Today publications that drew significant public attention and reignited debate over the outlet’s coverage of the Indiana Fever star. ESPN host Elle Duncan believes Clark may need to take a more active role in addressing these growing controversies surrounding her name.
Speaking on The Sports Gossip Show, a video of which Bobby Burack shared on X, Duncan made the case that the responsibility lies at least partly with Clark for publicly distancing herself from supporters who allegedly use her name to advance their own agendas.

“Love for it to be very clear to the people who think they are her fans, but are using her if she would say, stop that. I don’t want it. I’m tired of it,” Duncan said. “As opposed to what we’ve seen, which is the media makes up these narratives. The media makes up this discourse. That’s not true. The media highlights the stories and they show it…”
Duncan’s comments also came in response to Clark’s weekend interview with ESPN, in which the Fever star said the media often “controls the narrative” around her and can be “so far out of touch with what is reality.”
“The media did not make up that members of Congress are trying to get literal government intervention into whether you get fouled too hard,” Duncan continued. “Like, this stuff has to stop.”
“I would love for Caitlin’s team to go back to the drawing board and say, as much as we would love to live in a world where you get to just play basketball and be a great person and a great leader, and she’s all of those things, let’s try to figure out how we can get you to that reality where you get to just focus on this. How do we put this to bed? And that, I think, is the solution that everyone can live with,” Duncan added.
Duncan’s position, however, has been met with considerable pushback from fans who flatly disagree with her view. For many of them, Caitlin Clark has already addressed these issues repeatedly, and placing further responsibility on her shoulders is simply unfair.
“Caitlin Clark no longer has to do anything! She has addressed these issues several times — it’s over!!!” one fan wrote.
Another was even more pointed in their frustration: “You people are delusional. She has repeatedly said hate and bullying has no place and she does not condone it. Not good enough for you. If I were her I would just quit trying.”
Some fans went further, arguing that even if Clark followed Duncan’s suggestion, it would not actually solve anything.
“I don’t think her saying that would work. They either ignore that and say she is being pressured by the Black women on her team or they turn on her and also still be racist to the women in the WNBA,” one fan said.
Another fan, cutting straight to the point, said, “Duncan is wrong. Society is messed up and Clark can’t fix that.”
Many fans believe Clark primarily wants to focus on basketball, and one should let her.
“Caitlin seems to just want to play basketball, win, and be a good teammate. Too many idiots trying to pull her down” one fan wrote.
Elle Duncan’s suggestion might come from a place of concern about an escalating cycle that shows no signs of stopping on its own. But the fans pushing back are not wrong either; Clark has spoken out, repeatedly and clearly. Whether more words from her would silence the noise or simply feed more of it is a question nobody seems to have a definitive answer to.
