Yesterday, the Boston Red Sox fired the first shot of the trade deadline, trading for Washington Nationals slugger Curtis Mead, who checks the box for a right-handed power bat that the Red Sox needed.

However, according to ESPN’s MLB insider, Jeff Passan, this is far from Boston’s only move at the deadline. In fact, they might be getting a whole lot more aggressive.

According to Passan, the Red Sox aren’t done. “The Red Sox are not expected to stop with this deal, either, continuing to consider larger deals for another bat, sources said,” Passan wrote.
Mead fulfills one of two bats that they wanted, but they still need to upgrade either their other middle infield spot, DH, or at catcher.
Who could they pursue?

For catchers, their prices went up with Athletics All-Star Shea Langeliers’ potentially season-ending torn meniscus. With him off the market, the price for any above average catcher has skyrocketed as well.
Because of that, Colorado Rockies two-time All-Star Hunter Goodman might command a significant haul, more than Boston is willing to give up for a guy with only a year and a half of control. Boston might have to settle for someone like Ryan Jeffers, who would be a rental as his contract runs out after this season.
Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto is also someone Boston likes, but his horrible defense should limit him to DH if they were to acquire him.
The Red Sox have the assets to buy big

Right now, the Red Sox have a ton of depth to sell. Jarren Duran, Marcelo Mayer, Patrick Sandoval, and a bevy of prospects and AAA players that can flex to the MLB all could be on the block.
If Boston really wants to be as aggressive as they say they are, getting both a guy like Jeffers and Neto would take them from being a fringe contender, to one of the favorites to come out of the American League.
Hopefully, Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow and the front office have a plan, as the deadline is just a week away.
