Chiefs RB Emmett Johnson embraces special teams role at training camp

The Kansas City Chiefs selected former Nebraska Cornhuskers running back Emmett Johnson in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft to add some juice to their offensive backfield.
But in his first days at Chiefs training camp, Johnson is embracing a role outside of his usual rushing duties — taking on responsibility as a member of Kansas City's special teams unit.

During comments to the media on July 26, Johnson seemed to embrace his new avenue of utility, telling reporters that he is ultimately to earn as much playing time as possible, regardless of the position the team asks him to play.
“That’s how you get on the field, man. That’s how you help the team win," the former Cornhusker said of his special teams role. "If I’m not a starter, I want to go out and help on kick returns, punt returns, whatever it takes to help the team. That’s bigger than anything to me. I take big pride in helping the game in all phases and special teams can make or break a game.”
While it is unlikely that Johnson's contributions to Kansas City's 2026 campaign will be relegated solely to appearances as a member of the Chiefs' special teams unit, fans should expect to see his number called for kick and punt return duties early in the coming season.
