The knee injury that cut Miami Dolphins rookie wide receiver Chris Bell’s college career short will indeed keep him off the practice field to start training camp.

Bell was placed on the active/non-football injury list, the Dolphins announced Tuesday afternoon as rookies reported for training camp a week ahead of veterans.

The designation means Bell will be held out of drills and continue to rehab his torn ACL until he receives medical clearance to participate in football drills. He still counts against the team’s active 91-man roster during the summer while he recovers.

Bell goes on NFI instead of the physically-unable-to-perform list, because his injury occurred before arriving with his NFL team.

Bell suffered the injury late last college football season in a Nov. 22 loss for Louisville at SMU. Wednesday will be eight months since the injury.

The Dolphins selected Bell in the third round of the draft. By the time of the draft in late April, he was running 18 mph on a treadmill, showing he was ahead of schedule in his rehab at the time. At Miami’s offseason program, Bell was limited to light individual workouts on the side of practice during minicamp and organized team activities.

Bell was productive in his final season at Louisville, totaling 72 catches, 917 yards and three touchdowns. He had a stellar two-touchdown, 136-yard game in the Cardinals’ October upset of the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium.

When Bell is ready to practice and eventually play, there will be an opportunity open for him, after the Dolphins traded Jaylen Waddle and released Tyreek Hill this offseason. Bell was the second rookie wide receiver selected by the Dolphins , who took Texas Tech’s Caleb Douglas earlier in the third round and later added Missouri slot receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. in the fifth round.
