Chambers named Jailbird of Week

Joplin struggled against the top two teams in the MINK League last week. In six total contests, it won just two games, but in those two wins there were two pitching performances that led to victory.

On Thursday, the Jailbirds defeated the Carroll Merchants 5-2 in 10 innings and got a quality start out of Rhyn Chambers. On Friday, they took down the Clarinda A’s 4-3 and got a quality start from Kolt Ungeheuer.
Chambers and Ungeheuer had similar performances as they both made it through six innings and allowed just two runs. Chambers allowed six hits and walked two batters while Ungeheuer allowed three hits and four walks.
The main difference — and what set Chambers apart to be named the Jailbird of the Week for Week 7 — was their strikeout totals. Chambers struck out 11 batters while Ungeheuer sat down four on strikes.
Chambers comes to Joplin from San Clemente, California, where he prepped at San Clemente High School. He just completed his sophomore season at Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Chaminade happens to be the only Catholic university in Hawaii.
Chambers and the Silverswords compete in the Pacific West Conference as a part of the NCAA’s Division II level, the same level as Missouri Southern State University.
Chambers logged 21⅔ innings across 16 appearances as a freshman and posted a 2-1 record with four saves. His four saves led the team. He finished with a stellar earned run average of 1.66. He recorded 26 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .155 against him.
As a sophomore, things weren’t as smooth sailing. He finished last year with an ERA north of 14 in seven appearances.
Chambers will look to build off this recent outing with the Jailbirds as he heads into his junior year.
Joplin was back in action Tuesday against the Carroll Merchants. It has to finish a game that was postponed in the third inning from back in June and then play a full game 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.
Then it will host the Chillicothe Mudcats from Thursday through Saturday with all games scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. That will conclude the regular season. Joplin currently sits in fourth place just a half-game behind the St. Joseph Mustangs for third.
