Paul Finebaum says Dabo Swinney is ‘stuck on stupid’ with claims of greatness
· Yahoo Sports
From 2015-2019 Dabo Swinney led Clemson to a 71-5 record and four trips to the national championship game. It’s a run of success not seen anywhere outside of Nick Saban’s Alabama this century. Things have leveled off since then and the Tigers are coming off a 7-6 year last season despite being ranked No. 4 in the preseason AP Poll. That came on the heels of consecutive four-loss seasons for Swinney.

Because it’s college football, the coach has been placed on the hot seat on message boards and by some of the more brave members of the media. To no one’s surprise, he has vigorously defended himself by accurately pointing out that he’s had an incredibly productive career almost anyone patrolling the sidelines on Saturdays would love to have.
Finebaum’s comments
Paul Finebaum doesn’t want to hear it anymore and offered his latest criticism on Friday.
“I am getting so exasperated listening to Dabo tell us how great he used to be,” Finebaum said on “Get Up”. “They’re not great anymore. Dabo is just stuck on stupid right now trying to convince us that his program is still legitimate. It’s not. It’s slipping and sliding away. It’s good. Maybe they’ll win nine games this year, maybe they won’t. But they lost six games last year with the Heisman favorite. That is downright embarrassing.”
That’s kind of harsh. Though “stuck on stupid” is an elite phrase one just doesn’t hear enough. I wouldn’t say I am the biggest Swinney fan in the world but it does seem someone pertinent to the plot to admit that he has been great in a way precious few other programs could even approach since taking the reins. All good things have to come to an end and it does seem like we’re on the other side of the hill when it comes to Clemson.
But the thing about college football is that, especially now, power programs are one solid regular season away from getting the playoff where anything can happen. So while it may be true that Dabo has lost a bit of a leg to stand on when beating his chest, Finebaum and everyone else should be fair if and when the Tigers rise up again to look like a vintage of their former selves.
