The addition brings another top-tier nonconference opponent to the Spartans' schedule, with Tennessee having advanced to the Elite Eight in three straight seasons under coach Rick Barnes.
Michigan State has already revealed its Big Ten opponents for the upcoming season, though specific dates for each matchup aren't expected to arrive until September. Additionally, the Spartans will face Marquette in an exhibition game in Milwaukee on Oct. 24, will host SEC power Arkansas at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day and will play Gonzaga in a neutral-site game in Palm Desert, California, on Dec. 19.
Michigan State is 3-2 all-time against the Volunteers, with the last matchup taking place in the 2010 Elite Eight in St. Louis. The Spartans won, 70-69, on their way to the Final Four in Indianapolis, but lost to eventual runner-up Butler.
