After it was one of the Big 12's better units in 2024, Colorado's offense backslid tremendously in 2025.

Coach Deion Sanders' team ranked 114th nationally in yards per game (328.4) and 116th in points per game (20.9), and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur was demoted and stripped of playcalling duties midseason. Speaking at Big 12 media days in Frisco, Texas, on Tuesday, quarterback Julian Lewis shed some light on the dysfunction from last year in a clip that quickly made the rounds on social media.
Lewis said the Buffs did not watch much film last season or adequately gameplan for opposing defenses.
"My play, I'm actually looking at the defenses now," Lewis said. "Last year, we wasn't really looking at defenses much, just kind of high school free-balling, just out there playing football. But it's a lot bigger than that now, so it should be fun."

Sanders has brought in a new playcaller this fall, former Sacramento State head coach and UNLV offensive coordinator Brennan Marion. Colorado is hoping Marion and his go-go offense can unlock the best from Lewis, a former five-star recruit who played in four games and started two last fall.
Lewis, who was 17 when his true freshman season began, threw for 589 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions last fall, completing 55.3% of his passes. He's a potential bright spot on an offense that has a lot of question marks, and perhaps the added complexity to the scheme and game plan will help him take a major step.
