That is how long you have to wait until the World Cup kicks off, for what is the biggest iteration of the tournament in history, as 48 teams across 12 groups will battle for a spot in the knockout rounds.

Germany, which last won the competition in 2014, is searching for another championship with a squad they believe can go all the way. But is this 26-man squad as good as previous German contenders?

Game of the Group: Germany vs. Ecuador

The final group match for both sides, the European powerhouse against the South American dark horse, might be the 90 minutes that decide this quartet’s leader.

Ecuador might have the best defense in the entire World Cup, having conceded only 5 goals in 18 games during qualification.

You don’t break Ecuador; they break you. And while Germany has a lethal midfield and some strong forwards up top, it’s going to be a gigantic challenge to get past Ecuador’s iron defense.

Player of the Group: Florian Wirtz (Germany, Liverpool)

Wirtz is known as the miracle 21-year-old who led Bayer Leverkusen past unbeaten Bayern Munich two years ago to win the Bundesliga and put his name amongst the brightest young players in the world.

Now 23, Wirtz is still a magician in the middle of the field, but a bit of his shine has come off following a slow start to his English tenure with Liverpool. The World Cup will be a test for Wirtz to see if he can be the central player for a team capable of challenging for the trophy.

If he can rediscover the magic from two years ago and play at his peak form, then Germans are going to have quite the road trip across North America this summer.

Group Prediction

Although Germany isn’t as strong as in previous versions of Die Mannschaft, I still have them topping the group ahead of Ecuador, the Ivory Coast, and Curaçao.

Ecuador has a defense and a true midfield superstar in Moisés Caicedo, but their attack is inconsistent at best and might struggle to score even against the Ivory Coast and Curaçao, let alone Germany.

Expect the Ivory Coast to be a frisky third-place finisher that makes it to the knockouts, while Curaçao gets pummeled but celebrates being in their first World Cup.

  1. Germany
  2. Ecuador
  3. Ivory Coast
  4. Curaçao
