Coastal AD not expecting Kevin Schnall to leave for South Carolina or anywhere else

COLUMBIA — Kevin Schnall has been linked to South Carolina baseball's coaching vacancy, but Coastal Carolina athletic director Chance Miller doesn't seem concerned.

"I'm not planning on Kevin Schnall leaving, I'm planning on Kevin Schnall being the coach for a long time," Miller told WBTW News13.

Miller said June 4 he was talking to Schnall about building a roster for next year and getting back to the College World Series.

"I can't tell you what Kevin has done or not done but Kevin is our coach right now, he's actually over there doing exit interviews with the players," Miller said.

Schnall, 49, was promoted to head coach beginning with the 2025 season after spending most of his career as an assistant for the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina was the national runnerup in Schnall's first season.

Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball reported May 29 that the two leading candidates for the job "barring a last-second surprise" were Schnall and West Virginia's Steve Sabins.

Sabins spent nine seasons as an assistant coach of West Virginia before he was promoted to head coach in June 2024. WVU is playing in the super regional against Cal Poly on June 5.

Coastal Carolina went 37-23 and was eliminated by Florida State in the NCAA Tournament regionals.

The Chanticleers went 56–13 last year. Coastal Carolina set a record for program wins and won the Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament championships. Schnall was named the 2025 National Coach of the Year by Baseball America.

"I've got a five-year contract at Coastal. I'm the head baseball coach at Coastal Carolina," Schnall said May 30 when asked about the job opening in Columbia. "I can't stress it enough."

South Carolina has technically been looking for a coach since March when the school announced Paul Mainieri had coached his last game.

Mainieri went 28-29 and 6-24 in SEC play in his first season in 2025, which marked the worst conference record in program history.

After South Carolina started this season 12-11 overall and 0-4 in SEC play, the school announced March 21 that Mainieri would not return, and interim coach Monte Lee took over.

The Gamecocks finished 22-35, 7-23 and their 13-game losing streak is the longest for the program since 1961. South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati fired Lee and two other assistants on May 21.
