Commanders get an encouraging surprise on first day of OTAs
· Yahoo Sports
Something very encouraging occurred on the first day of Washington Commanders OTAs.
Washington started Wednesday and will continue through Friday in what head coach Dan Quinn has referred to as Phase 2. The Commanders met and conducted the first day of their 'voluntary' Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

Logan Paulsen commented that, seeing both coordinators are new and putting in their installations of the offense and defense, he felt this OTA session held a lot of significance for the Commanders. Well, apparently, left tackle Laremy Tunsil feels the same way. Because Tunsil, who has not been shy in the past to convey he was not going to attend voluntary OTAs, was in attendance on Wednesday. Tunsil did not attend last year's voluntary OTAs, but reported for training camp in good condition and played well in the 2025 season.

Offensive coordinator David Blough is not only in his first season as Washington's OC, but his first season as an OC at any level of football. So, it should encourage the other returning offensive players to have Tunsil report for voluntary duty. It reveals Tunsil's commitment to the Commanders in general and to Blough in particular. Tunsil wants to be supportive, and he demonstrated this today by breaking from his normal offseason process of continuing his workouts at home and reporting only when it is mandatory.
Tunsil spent his first three seasons with the Dolphins, his next six with the Texans and last season with the Commanders. So, entering his 11th NFL season, Tunsil determines to attend voluntary OTA? Breaking from his norm, understanding this is a special circumstance (OC David Blough). So the 31-year old veteran of 139 NFL starts, set aside his own personal preference for the good of the team.
That's leadership, setting aside what you would rather do, for what you realize is good for the team. Today was a good sign, with Laremy Tunsil showing he has bought in and is willing to put in extra effort, though he probably didn't need to.
But even better, Tunsil felt like at least for this year, he needed to be in Ashburn at the OTA.
