A day after a big 18-point, five-rebound, five-assist, five-steals game for his 3SSB Phenom United team in Indiana on Sunday, Tyson was on UC's campus shooting videos of the locker room on his Instagram account on Monday, May 18.

"It was a smooth visit," Tyson told The Enquirer. "Coach (Jerrod) Calhoun seems like an experienced vet. He's a proven coach and a winner."

Tyson said his defensive intensity is his calling card and a laundry list of schools have expressed interest. He plans more visits and a possible decision by August, but came away from his UC visit impressed by Calhoun's pitch.

"I think they're on the horizon of some great things," he said. "It's very evident with what he did at Utah State. He's a winner all around. I wouldn't be shocked if Cincinnati gets back to where they were in the early 2000s."

Josh Tyson has starred at Lakota West basketball

Now at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Tyson was the Greater Miami Conference Athlete of the Year for Coach of the Year Kelven Moss at Lakota West. He averaged 16.3 points per game, 3.8 assists per game and two steals while shooting 62.9% from the floor. His 3-point percentage was 34.4%.

Tyson scored in double figures in every Lakota West game but one. He had 28 points vs. La Lumiere (national team in North Carolina), 22 points and 10 rebounds against Fairfield and 23 points and 11 rebounds against St. John's (Washington, D.C.) and 20 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in a season-ending loss in March to Pickerington Central.

Tyson is friends with Kam Mercer, having known him since third grade. The two blue-chips played against one another in February with Lakota West beating Princeton 58-53. Tyson had 19 points and Mercer, 16.

"We love to compete," Tyson said. "He's a great guy on a great team and we just happen to play each other."

Their last meeting was so popular that it was moved from Lakota West to Xavier's Cintas Center.

"We almost had 8,000 tickets sold on a Friday night," Tyson said.

Should both players commit to UC, it would be an unprecedented haul of local talent.
