The Carolina Panthers spent the spring building around their quarterback. They picked up his fifth-year option, brought in offensive help, and treated free agency like a team trying to win now.

What they have not done, and reportedly will not do, is hand him the contract extension everyone assumed was coming.

Bryce Young will play out the fourth year of his rookie deal without a long-term agreement in place, according to The Athletic beat writer Joseph Person, as relayed by Dov Kleiman on Saturday.

Young, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 draft, was widely expected to land a significant deal this offseason after the Panthers won the NFC South.

What Carolina's wait-and-see approach means for Young in 2026

General manager Dan Morgan has not publicly closed the door. In a recent interview with SiriusXM's Adam Schein, Morgan said a multiyear deal is "something that we're talking about here internally," adding the team will handle it at the right time. Internally, though, the front office has reasons to be patient.

Young's numbers from last season tell the story of a quarterback who is improving but not yet elite.

He threw for 23 touchdowns against 11 interceptions and helped Carolina to an 8-9 record that was good enough to claim NFC South.

His 87.8 passer rating ranked tied for 26th among qualified passers, and Pro Football Reference numbers had his adjusted QBR at 47.6, tied for 25th in the league.

Carolina is already on the hook for $25.9 million guaranteed in 2027, which gives them flexibility to wait.

If Young clears 3,500 yards and cuts down the turnovers, the Panthers will pay. If he plateaus, this looks like Buccaneers-Jameis Winston or Titans-Marcus Mariota, where the team eventually moved on after Year 5.

Either way, the pressure point has shifted from the front office to Young. The next 17 games decide whether Carolina commits or starts plotting an exit.
