Enough said.
But with the Bengals going all-in around Joe Burrow this offseason while showing growth as an organization, it’s not really an apt one now.
Still, the conversation about Burrow’s future in the NFL remains a national talking point.
When confronted in a mailbag with whether Burrow will play his entire career with the Bengals, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer presented a level-headed comparison by bringing up the name Matthew Stafford.
“Like Burrow, Stafford had some high-end talent around him on offense in Detroit, but played with only two top-10 defenses, and just four that ranked in the top half of the league over his 12 seasons as a Lion,” Breer wrote. “So there are some similarities, including the fact that both quarterbacks genuinely wanted to be agents of change for the teams that drafted them.”
Breer went on to note that Burrow badly wants to win, just like Stafford, but that things aren’t close to any sort of breaking point.
It’s obvious that Burrow isn’t at that Stafford point yet in terms of dissatisfaction, even before this offseason. Still, some of the career parallels to Stafford are pretty interesting to note.
To their credit, the Bengals understand these things, whether they’re thinking about Stafford as an example or not. They spent major money on the defense this offseason and pulled the shocker Dexter Lawrence trade, among other moves, and Burrow sounds happy.
Now, it’s just about putting it all together on the field.
