That’s two practices down, and a whole lot more to go.

The Green Bay Packers closed down rookie minicamp on Saturday after a pair of practices that allowed the coaching staff to get to know the team’s rookie class. As always, it’s more orientation for the players than any substantial scheme installation, but that doesn’t make the experience or the event any less valuable. Meanwhile, the coaches get the opportunity to spend time with their new players in a more limited setting before they get dumped into the bigger meeting rooms.
In this writer’s opinion, at least, it’s an excellent event and something that the NFL gets exactly right as a way of easing rookies into their new surroundings.
There was no big news out of minicamp, though, which is probably for the best. No injuries of note took place, though the team also elected not to sign any of their tryout players (including a certain notable veteran). But after having had the occasional big injury in the past (think Vince Biegel, who broke a finger on the first day of his rookie camp back in 2017 and then broke a bone in his foot on the very next day), getting out of the weekend with no bad news is a relief.
Now it’s time to integrate the rookies in with the rest of the roster, with OTAs quickly approaching. There are three more weeks of the off-field phase of the offseason program, which will give the rookies a chance to get more classroom work done before OTAs begin in late May.
