While Alejandro Garnacho, Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer took a lot of the credit in Chelsea’s great performance against Aston Villa on Wednesday night, there was also a great showing from Moises Caicedo in the middle of the park.

It was one of his best games we can remember on the ball. His stats were superb as he played a key role in getting possession moving forward at pace.

As we noted in our piece yesterday: “He completed 56 of his 58 passes, and added an amazing 5 of 5 long balls completed too. His 7 passes into the final third were joint second in the game with Reece James.”

His season highlights show just how good he’s been in general in terms of his passing. Long short, under pressure or with time to pick a ball, it’s an underrated part of his game.

Formation tweak allows Caicedo’s skill in possession to come to the fore

Caicedo has always been more than a plain destroyer, but it seems like we’re seeing more and more of his passing game now that he’s often deployed alongside Andrey Santos (or in this case Reece James) in a double pivot, with Enzo Fernandez further forward.

This puts the onus on Caicedo to do more with the ball, and he’s shown just how capable he is of doing that. An elite player who keeps getting better.
